The Common Council meeting Tuesday kicks off a new 3-year chapter in city government. Mayor John Nelson and 3rd District Alderman Yousef Hasan both get sworn in for the second time. Districts 4 and 6 get new representation, as Mira Kresovic and Danelle Kenney join the Council. Kresovic ran unopposed since Alderwoman Courtney Day decided not to seek re-election. Kenney defeated then-incumbent Alderman Jason Craig to take that seat.

With the fresh faces also comes the task of aldermanic representation on several city commissions. Mayor Nelson makes the nominations, and the list is as follows:

  • District 1 Alderman Peccarelli – License Committee
  • District 2 Alderwoman Eichmann – License Committee, Plan Commission
  • District 3 Alderman Hasan – Board of Public Works, Library Board, Personnel Committee, Quarry Monitoring Committee
  • District 4 Alderwoman Kresovic – Finance Committee, Parks Commission, Personnel Committee
  • District 5 Alderman Salous – Plan Commission
  • District 6 Alderwoman Kenney – Fair Commission, Finance Committee, License Committee, Personnel Committee

These appointments and monthly meetings are in addition to regular Council meetings, under the regular pay rate for alderpersons of $11,400 per year.

The Common Council will also be electing a Common Council President, currently held by Alderwoman Eichmann. Eichmann has served the city on the Council the longest, so there’s some thought that she will retain her Council Presidency on top of her joining the influential Plan Commission. The Council President serves as Acting Mayor when needed. That additional responsibility also comes with no bump in pay.
